Atkins Diet

The purpose of the Atkins Diet is to alter the metabolism to chiefly burn body fat for energy. This should result in effortless weight loss. The main requirement of the Atkins diet is to limit the amount of carbohydrates consumed and to replace these carbohydrates with foods high in protein and fat. The theory behind the Atkins diet is that the body burns both fat and carbohydrates for energy but burns carbohydrates first. By cutting carbohydrates from the diet the body has no alternative but to burn body fat instead. In burning its own stores of body fat, the body goes into a state of ‘ketosis’. When the body is in ketosis it is usual to feel less hunger. The Atkins diet allows the dieter to eat foods which would normally be restricted when dieting. The diet is split into four phases: Phase 1 – Induction Phase 2 – Ongoing Weight Loss Phase 3 – Pre-Maintenance Phase 4 – Life Time Maintenance During the induction phase, dieters are restricted to 20grams of carbohydrates per day. The types of food which is permitted is extremely restricted although there are very few limits on the amount of food on the plate. The induction period lasts for two weeks and there are no exceptions to the 20gram intake of carbohydrates during these two weeks. There are no fruits and only a few leafy green vegetables allowed during induction. After the induction period, carbohydrates are slowly re-introduced but only fibre rich foods. As with most diet plans, exercise is encouraged. Pros: • Increased protein in the diet usually leads to reduced cravings and dramatic weight loss. • Rapid weight loss early in the diet motivates dieters to carry on with the plan. • The plan is simple to follow. Cons: • Consuming large amounts of fat can lead to heart problems. • Many dieters have complained of side effects such as fatigue, bad breath and constipation.
